Meet the Quinn’s

David Quinn and his son, Jaxon, were each born with a limb deficiency; both wear a prosthesis. It is very safe to say that neither is limited in any way by the use of an artificial limb.

David and Jaxon, age 6, see Hilmo Hodzic at our Centerville office. Of course Jaxon became of favorite patient of Hilmo’s from the first visit.

We first met the Quinn’s in the summer of 2007 when each needed a new prosthesis. Both were wearing prostheses – David a below-knee and Jaxon an above knee device, but this was the first time Fidelity Orthopedic had the pleasure of working with David and the joy of working with Jaxon.

After the initial evaluation and the measurements, each were fit with a ThermoLyn® Stiff socket. The advantages of this socket are tremendous and is our standard first check socket.

It’s not easy getting a picture of Jaxon when he’s not “in motion”.

David would wear the ThermoLyn® socket for several weeks before getting his definitive socket.

There is a great benefit of the clear check socket to the patient and to the third party payer.

ThermoLyn® Stiff is an excellent material for creating dynamic test sockets, as it offers an unprecedented combination of clarity, thermoformability, rigidity, and toughness.

These clear test sockets are made with Thermolyn ® thermoplastic. This material may be easily heat-relieved for making final fitting adjustments, yet it still maintains its overall high strength. This socket use in dynamic programs allows us to observe the socket fit and make the adjustments to the socket while the patient wears it during the “break-in” period. When the patient’s limb “stabilizes”, the clear check socket can be used to create a top quality, cost-effective definitive socket.

This means fewer sockets billed to the third party payer because of volume changes in the residual limb!

David’s prosthesis includes a Renegade® foot manufactured by Freedom Innovations.

Utilizing Z-Shock carbon graphite technology, the Renegade® is the industry's lightest, most responsive shock foot. The foot incorporates a full-length, split shank heel and offers unmatched energy return compared to other shock systems. With a system that truly propels amputees through the gait cycle, smooth gait is experienced at any speed.

The Renegade LP® offers the same great features and benefits in a lower profile foot for amputees with decreased clearance due to a long residual limb. It is also the ideal component for prostheses that require a carefully designed cosmetic finish or additional components such as rotators.

David told us his new socket fit was very comfortable and he was extremely satisfied with the outcome. He added he felt that this prosthesis and the socket fit were superior to the ones he had previously.

Our patients, David and Jaxon, continue to be Functional Level K4 amputees; high activity users who exceed normal ambulation skills.

Hilmo went to one of Jaxon’s soccer games last fall: he said it was great to watch him play. “He’s a dynamo on the field”, Hilmo said.

Then Jaxon was wrestling, but now it’s baseball season and Jaxon is on the field.

The ever-active athlete Jaxon has expressed an interest in going to watch the Extreme Games sponsored by College Park Industries.

Our own Transformer… just like Optimus Prime, Jaxon Quinn is the
“good guy”.

(Amputees are eligible to take part in the competition at age fourteen. See www.extremitygames.com for more on this event and why it appeals to Jaxon).

We wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Jaxon and David Quinn as Extremity Game participants in eight years.
