Fidelity Orthopedic, Inc. was founded by Paul and Vernon Murka, prosthetists who left Germany in 1927 for the United States to escape Hitler's rising threat.
The brothers began their practice in downtown Dayton's Fidelity Building (hence the name, Fidelity Orthopedic). Their sons, Heinz and Gerhardt, were later trained in the business.
Their sons, Heinz and Gerhardt, were later trained in the business.
The family-owned business was moved to northwest Dayton in August 1970.
Paul Murka assumed ownership of Fidelity Orthopedic in 1989.
Heinz' son represented the third generation of his family to have chosen the orthotic and prosthetic profession.
Paul led the company into 21st century prosthetics and orthotics using cutting edge processes both clinically and administratively. In 2009, Hilmo Hodzic, Paul’s protégé, became President of Fidelity Orthopedic with Mark Murka and Adam Murka as Directors of the Corporation.
Following the family tradition, Mark will take part in the Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center’s Postbaccalaureate Certificate Program in Prosthetics. After a year’s residency he will be the sixth “Prosthetist Murka"
It has been 80 years since those two young men left their native Germany to find a new home in the United States. The courage and determination that step took is similar to the determination our patients’ show while adjusting to a disability. We are thankful to have been, and to continue to be, part of the lives of our thousands of courageous patients. |
