Brent’s Thoughts…
I started in the Orthotic & Prosthetic field working as a technician while I was still in college at the University of Cincinnati.
I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field to help people but I had no idea what that was until I was introduced to Orthotics and Prosthetics through a friend of mine in school. As soon as I had my first experience in patient care I knew that I wanted to be a clinician.
When I started in the field there was only one microprocessor knee and orthotics was basically the same as it had been for the last fifteen years. The technology in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics is getting better every year.
There are now at least five microprocessor controlled prosthetic knees and the changes in the Orthotic field have been dramatic, for example, microprocessor stance controlled KAFO’s as well as multiple other choices of stance controlled KAFO’s that were not available even five years ago.
There are now advancements like the functional electronic stimulation which combined with other technology will, in my opinion, change the lives of many patient’s who even 5-10 years ago had little tor no option of being functional again.
It’s an exciting time to be in the field and Orthotics and Prosthetics is only going to get better. The most important thing about the advancements in technology is that it helps me assist an even broader range of patients and helping people is why I decided to make orthotics and prosthetics a profession.
